CANARY WHARF PRESS RELEASE
no: 34
21 September 2009
Green Shoots at Canary Wharf

People interested in being more environmentally-friendly are encouraged to head for Canary Wharf on 2 and 3 October.

London’s iconic business and shopping district is hosting the eighth annual Green Canary Day, with a wide range of free activities encouraging eco-aware practices in the workplace, home and community.

Highlights include a team of falcons roving the Canary Wharf skyline to deter pigeons and ‘plastic bag-free days,’ with reusable cotton Green Canary Day bags being given to shoppers throughout the retail malls. Over thirty organisations will be running activities and exhibiting green products and services on each of the two days.

Canary Wharf Group Company Secretary John Garwood said: “Canary Wharf is well known as a thriving business district and we are also striving to become one of the UK’s best examples of environmental regeneration.

“Canary Wharf Group has an important role to play in bringing local people and companies together to encourage sustainable practices. Green Canary Day helps do this and makes being green fun, especially for youngsters,” he said.

This year’s event also incorporates a competition asking local under 16 year olds to come up with ten words explaining why it’s ‘good to be green.’ The prize is a bicycle and accessories from Evans Cycles in Canary Wharf.

Canary Wharf Group was named one of the Sunday Times 60 Best Green Companies in the UK in 2009 and achieved 80.2% of its environmental and social targets in 2008, as independently verified by Bureau Veritas.
