Strike Action:
London Underground has announced that a 48 hour tube strike is planned by the RMT. If the strike proceeds, it will commence at 18:59 today, 9 June. Importantly for Canary Wharf the DLR will be operating a normal service and Thames Clippers will run an enhanced service utilising all of their boats. Normal services are expected to resume on Friday morning, 12 June.
Operational Services:
During the period of the strike, the following services will operate:
National Rail – Services will operate as normal and Oyster Pay-As-You-Go cards will be accepted on all National Rail journeys within Greater London during the period of the strike.
Buses – An additional 100 buses will be run on key routes during the strike.
DLR and London Overground – All services will operate as normal, including the North London Line. There is likely to be heavy congestion on the DLR so passengers should allow extra time for travel.
River Services – All services will operate and capacity will be increased. Thames Clippers will be running alternate boats fast between London Bridge Pier and Canary Wharf between 06:57 hrs and 08:34 hrs. In the evening the westbound service is further enhanced to 6 boats per hour (17:38 hrs to 18:58 hrs), again with alternate boats running a direct shuttle service to London Bridge.
Alternative Routes To/From Canary Wharf
Commuters travelling into Waterloo, London Bridge or Charing Cross can take a national rail service to Greenwich or Lewisham and travel to Canary Wharf on the DLR. There are at least 5 trains per hour from Charing Cross/Waterloo East to either Greenwich or Lewisham and at least 12 trains per hour from London Bridge.
The DLR will be available as an alternative to the Jubilee line from Stratford.
The North London Line can be used to travel to Stratford from Highbury and Islington, Kentish Town West, West Hampstead and Willesden Junction where interchange from several National Rail lines is possible.
There are several bus services to Canary Wharf, including route 135 which operates from Old Street Station via Liverpool Street Station and Aldgate Station.
As an alternative to the Jubilee line from West Ham, c2c users will be able to continue to Limehouse and join the DLR.
River services can be used to travel to Canary Wharf pier from the London Eye (Waterloo), Embankment, Blackfriars, Bankside, London Bridge and Tower.
Cycling will be encouraged. Canary Wharf has 960 bicycle stands and a further 405 underground. During the period of the strike people will be able to park bicycles in 3 of the 4 raised corners of Cabot Square.
Talks are continuing between London Underground and RMT and you are therefore advised to check travel updates before starting your journey.
